01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Just off the lively streets of Iidabashi, down a quiet alleyway, Yakko Sushi fills its counter seats on weekday lunchtimes as diners settle in to watch the chef at work. The house omakase bowl is the midday staple, composed according to the day's market catch with cuts such as striped jack, splendid alfonsino, red sea bream, and tuna arranged cleanly over seasoned vinegared rice. The bright, acidic lift of the sushi rice balances the natural richness of the fish, with pickled ginger and garnishes keeping each bite lively.

The lunchtime selection extends beyond the daily assortment. A two-variety seafood bowl pairs fish suited to ginger-infused soy sauce, such as horse mackerel, bonito, or Pacific saury, while the chirashi bowl presents a colorful spread featuring Pacific bluefin tuna, scallop, crab, and flying fish roe. Every bowl arrives with a bowl of miso soup brewed with prawn heads, lending a deep, fragrant crustacean broth that warmly washes down the cool, rich fish.

Run by the chef and the proprietress, the counter-only room maintains the unhurried calm of an old-fashioned neighborhood sushi shop. In the evening, the counter transitions into an easygoing stop for sashimi and nigiri paired with sake such as Asahiyama and Takashimizu, cold beer, or shochu, offering a relaxed perch for enjoying seasonal fish without pretense.
